Warriors drop tourney opener

Whittell’s strong pitching streak ended abruptly Friday, as Lovelock scored five-spots in each of its first two at-bats en route to a 14-1 win at the Silver Stage Crossover Tournament. Walks and shoddy Warrior fielding aided the Mustangs as much as their bats in the tourney-shortened four-inning tilt. Three Warrior pitchers couldn’t stem the tide.

Whittell’s bats went cold too, as Seth Montez fanned seven for the Mustangs and held the Warriors to just three hits. The red and gold scored their lone run in the third when Jack Sharp singled, stole second and advanced to third on the same wild pitch. Chris Evans knocked him home with an infield out.

Other bright spots for the Warriors included Cody Gibson’s single in the second to break up Montez’s perfect game, and Matt Elliott’s double the third, the only extra-base hit for Whittell. Sharp, 1-for-2 today, has hit safely in all six games for Whittell and is batting .600 with a .667 OBP.

UP NEXT: The Warriors get a chance to bounce back Saturday with a doubleheader at Silver Stage, as the tourney continues.

Line score:

Lovelock 5 5 2 2 — 14

Whittell 0 0 1 0 — 1
