Forest Service announces spring 2013 recreation area opening dates

As the last of the snow melts in the South Shore, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin opening recreational facilities around the basin.

Here’s a list of some popular recreation sites scheduled to open soon:

MAY 10: Chimney Beach; Eagle Falls; Inspiration Point; Kiva Picnic Area; Secret Harbor

MID-MAY: William Kent beach and campground

MAY 15: Sawmill Pond Picnic Area

MAY 17: Baldwin Beach; Bayview campground and trailhead; Fallen Leaf Campground; Meeks Bay beach and campground; Nevada beach and campground

MAY 18: Meeks Bay Resort

MAY 24: Camp Richardson RV camping; Pope Beach

MAY 25 / MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Angora Lookout; Big Meadow Trailhead; Tallac Historic Site; Taylor Creek Visitor Center

JUNE 14: Camp Richardson regular camping

MID-JUNE: Angora Lakes Resort

Campgrounds, beaches and forest roads generally open in mid-May, weather permitting. Before recreation sites can open to the public, the Forest Service must hire crews to staff and manage the sites, clean up from winter, remove safety hazards and wait for the danger of a freeze to pass before turning on water systems, according to a press release.

Parking, trash removal and restroom facilities will remain closed until the recreation sites officially open. Until the parking lots open, please park your vehicle off the roadway, avoid parking on vegetation, and do not block access gates, the release stated.

For a complete list of projected opening dates, visit, or call the Forest Supervisor’s office at 530-543-2694, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
