A couple of All-State football talents from South Tahoe will suit up one final time in their high school careers in the annual Sertoma Classic all-star football game.
Record-setting quarterback John Cefalu and tight end/linebacker Cale Backinger were selected to compete in the 32nd edition of the showcase game, which will be held at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno on June 21. Gates open at 6 p.m. Kickoff is at 7.
The game will feature the best recently graduated senior players from 24 participating high schools in Northern Nevada.
Cefalu and Backinger are members of the Blue team, which will be led into battle against the Silver all-stars by Damonte Ranch coach Shawn Dupris and his staff.
Longtime Truckee head coach Bob Shaffer and his staff will lead the Silver team. Shaffer and crew also coached the Silver all-stars in last year’s game, as well as 2010. This year’s game will mark Shaffer’s seventh and final Sertoma Classic, as he announced his retirement from coaching this past winter.
The Blue Team is made up of players from Division I schools McQueen, Damonte Ranch, Carson and Reno, Division I-A members South Tahoe, Elko, Fernley and Sparks, and Division III North Tahoe, Incline, Pershing County, Silver Stage and Yerington.
The Silver team consists of Division I schools Reed, Spanish Springs, Hug, Galena and Bishop Manogue, Division I-A Fallon, Lowry, Dayton and Spring Creek and Division III Battle Mountain.
In last year’s game, special teams gaffes enabled the Blue all-stars to break the three-year winning streak of the Silver, as three bad snaps led to 14 straight points by the Blue squad en route to a 34-27 victory.
The game, which is sponsored by the Sparks Sertoma Club, first began in 1981.
