Officials: No one hurt in Tahoe City house fire

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — No one was hurt Wednesday after a quick-moving fire destroyed a Tahoe City home and came dangerously close to engulfing surrounding vegetation and structures.

The fire at 1895 Silver Tip Drive in the Talmont area of Tahoe City was reported at about 4:40 a.m. Wednesday by a neighbor who described the home as “fully engulfed with fire,” according to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District.

The home’s lone occupant escaped with his dog and was not injured, officials said.

The fire was contained to the structure, which was heavily damaged; its cause remained under investigation as of Thursday afternoon.

“At this time, it’s not suspicious in nature,” said NTFPD Public Information Officer Dave Zaski.

Upon arrival, crews observed the home “fully engulfed, with trees around the structure torching and downed power lines,” according to the fire district.

Units from Calfire and the Squaw Valley Fire Department assisted North Tahoe Fire to quickly extinguish the fire before it spread.

Earlier Tuesday, the greater Truckee/Tahoe region was under a red flag warning, representing critical fire danger.

“The winds had died down and the humidity rose quite a bit, but had it happened eight hours before, we could have had a major situation in that neighborhood,” Zaski said. “We would have had our hands full and we could have lost several homes.”

The same red flag conditions were in place on June 24, 2007, when the Angora fire ignited. The blaze, which started from an illegal campfire, eventually destroyed 242 residences and 67 commercial structures and scorched 3,100 acres of land in South Lake Tahoe.

Wednesday’s incident also marked the second house fire in the Talmont area of Tahoe City this year.

On Jan. 13, a home at 491 Club Drive was destroyed and its four occupants were displaced due to the fire that started after an ember escaped the home’s fireplace.

The occupants’ three dogs reportedly died in the blaze.
