The South Tahoe Viking Pee Wees kicked off their season with a 35-13 victory against the Sparks Wolf Pack on Saturday at Viking Stadium.
Sparks was unable to stop the rushing attack of the Vikings. The offensive line of Troy Gerard, Colby Glaze, Gunner Barnwell, Giovanni Fena, Russell Degiscjer, Kia Poletti, and Alex Casper did an outstanding job. They opened running lanes for the backs all day, and the running backs were not hitting the defense until the 5-yard line. Tyler Wattanachinda and Henry Vacakis took advantage of the good blocking upfront and were unstoppable.
The Viking defense shut down Sparks’ rushing attack. The front line of Zack Pexa, Kyle Ford, Issac Sanchez, Adam Ericson, Tanner Pierce and Kyle Stoker were in the Sparks’ backfield all night disrupting every play. Linebackers Kody Griffis and James Knudson flew all over the field. With the D line success, Griffis and Knudson were free to move and put big hits on the Sparks ball carriers.
Troy Gerard and Isaiah Womack each had interceptions, stalling Sparks’ passing game.
“This was a complete team game by our kids, even special teams stepped up,” head coach Sean Griffis said. “Issac Sanchez was 2-for-3 kicking extra points. Extra points when kicked are worth two at this level since it’s harder to kick one along with the snapping and blocking all coming together.
“If we are able to continue to do this, this could be a huge advantage for us down the line,” Griffis said.
