Senior Jenny Burks had two goals and two assists, while Jordyn Dion added two goals and an assist as the South Tahoe girls’ soccer team clinched the Ruby Mountain League regular season title with a 7-0 win on Thursday at Sparks. Kendall Eagan, Valeria Garcia and Beth Jaggard also scored for the Vikings, who finished the regular season 13-1-2 in league (41 points).
South Tahoe (13-3-3) will be the No. 1 seed at the Northern Division 1-A Regional Playoffs and plays fourth-seeded Elko next Friday in Fallon in a regional semifinal. Truckee and Fallon play in the other regional semifinal. Senior starters Cassidy Jackson, Sarah Higginbotham and Brittany Hubberts, who have all missed games in the past week due to injury or illness, are expected to return for the postseason.
“We’ve put ourselves in a nice position heading into the playoffs,” STHS coach Jeremy Evans said. “I like the direction this team is heading in at the moment. We’ve dealt with some injuries and illnesses the past two weeks, but we still finished the season with five straight wins without allowing a goal in those games. While I expect everyone to be healthy for playoffs, it’s reassuring to know we can get results even when we’re not 100 percent. But I’m excited at being 100 percent for the first time in a while and taking our strongest group into the playoffs.”
