Whittell boys basketball earned two wins this past weekend, putting them in first place in the IV Northern league.
On Friday, the Warriors traveled to Smith Valley and came away with a 66-27 win. Palmer Chaplin led all scorers with 24 points and a season-high 10 free throw attempts. Bryce Bronken finished with 18 and Mark Waite had 10.
“Although we won big I didn’t think it was a particularly strong game for us,” Coach Phil Bryant stated in an email. “We were a little careless with the ball and really didn’t shoot very well.”
On Saturday, Whittell was home against league favorite Virginia City.
Both teams struggled to get offense started as the first quarter ended with Virginia City ahead 8-6. In the second quarter, the Muckers went on a 10-0 run and had an 11 point lead going into halftime.
After leading 41-39 at the end of the third quarter, the Warriors went on to win 60-53.
“It was a signature win over a quality team,” Bryant said.
“We can’t settle with the win and think it’s all over because we still have to play Sierra Lutheran — a well coached and disciplined team — as well as, Mineral County again, Virginia City at Virginia City and 3 others.”
Chaplin again led the scoring with 20 points followed by Quinn Kixmiller and brothers Colin and Spenser Buchholz all with nine. There were 43 fouls called during the game and Whittell combined to shoot 46 free throws.
“I said at the beginning of the season that I didn’t think anyone would go undefeated in league and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a league champion with as many as 3 losses,” Bryand said. “We want to be there at the end so we need to play with urgency and composure in every game.”
