Challenging conditions for high school ski races

Whittell High School hosted dual slalom races at Heavenly on Wednesday.

The first race took place around 9:30 a.m. under bright, sunny skies, which soon gave way to clouds and a steady downpour throughout the afternoon.

Racers from seven area high schools competed in the races that started as time trials with the top 32 skiers move into brackets and dual style races.

The conditions made for difficult skiing and resulted in a few minor falls.

Whittell’s Danica Bunnett finished second overall for the girls behind South Lake Tahoe’s Maia Bickert. North Tahoe swept the boys side finishing in all three top spots.

With the sweep, North Tahoe had the highest score of the day for boys with 56 followed by South Tahoe (53), Douglas (48), Truckee (40) and Whittell and Carson (24). South Tahoe the best team of the day for girls ending with 56 points followed by Whittell (55), North Tahoe (54), Carson (53), Truckee (48), Incline (40) and Douglas (24).

“The conditions were tough, but I was happy with how the boys and girls raced,” Whittell coach Patrick Kelly said.

The next alpine races will be hosted by Incline Wednesday at Diamond Peak.
