Seamstress creates custom interior goods for Lake Tahoe homes

Every inch of Linda Spivack's store Focus on Interiors is covered in handmade pillows, displays of fabrics and antique knick-knacks. The walls are lined with quirky needlepoints and vintage paintings of mountains and flowers.
For nearly 10 years Spivack has operated her store on the South Shore. What began as an antique and quilt shop in Tahoe City back in 1990 has since transformed into a home interior shop filled with carefully curated products and handmade pillows.
"I changed my business and got out of quilting because you can't make a living at it. I started getting more and more into making pillows and sewing custom items," said Spivack, pointing to two current projects at her sewing station: new leather interiors for a custom van project and a trio of matching pillows.
Spivack learned how to sew from her mother — and today, she sews 60 hours a week.
"Nobody sews anymore," said Spivack. "It's totally a lost art."
On the South Shore there are only a handful of places that still offer the service.

Focus on Interiors sells around 500 different types of fabrics, which Spivack can craft into anything from window seat cushions to large floor poufs.
"My pillows are probably a little bit more than TJ Maxx, but they are quality and one of a kind," said Spivack. "If you look through Architectural Digest … every home in there has something custom — and that's what I do."
Focus on Interiors is located at 868 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.
