Check out these South Lake Tahoe bakeries when planning Thanksgiving dessert
Special to the Tribune
Thanksgiving is around the corner, and chances are you’re responsible for putting food on the table. In charge of dessert? We’ve got you covered. Whether you’re in need of pies, cakes or cookies, you’ll find something here on the South Shore — and your friends and family will appreciate the small-town purchase.
Don’s Cakes by the Lake
If you’re looking to take a taste of Tahoe out of town, Don’s Cakes by the Lake will be your go-to. While you may assume that Don and Co. only bake cakes, their specialties also include pies, bagels, pastries, muffins and more. Bonus — they bake all treats fresh daily!
Don’s Cakes by the Lake’s selection of pies qualifies it as the perfect spot for Thanksgiving desserts. Offering apple, pecan, pumpkin, cream pies and more, each is made from scratch, minus the fruit which — as Don says — comes from the earth. Don will custom bake any special request cakes and pies, too.
Standard large pies cost $18; cakes and other desserts range from $1.50 to $20.
Don always welcomes walk-ins, but if you are looking for a specific pie or cake, order ahead of time via phone. Don’s Cakes by the Lake is open Thursday through Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 530-542-2253. It is located at 661 Emerald Bay Road.
Cakes by Grace
Grace and her team make beautiful desserts sure to impress any out-of-town relative. Known for their amazing wedding cake designs, Grace wants locals to know that Cakes by Grace has your holiday festivities covered. From cake pops to amazing pie designs, Cakes by Grace will impress any Grinch this holiday season.
The dessert collection ranges from finger food to layered cakes, including cake pops, cookies, cupcakes, shortbread, mini and large pies, and cakes by design.
Cakes by Grace has the pie business down — this year alone it features Dutch-apple pies, pumpkin pies, and something Grace calls pumpkin-pumpkin pies. The apples and pumpkins come straight from Apple Hill, and Grace’s grandchildren pick all produce.
The prices for small desserts like cookies and mini cupcakes start at $1.50, but prices go up to approximately $50 depending on the type of dessert.
You’ll want to order your Thanksgiving dessert ahead of time so Grace and her team can devote enough time to the amazing creation. For more information or to order, contact Cakes by Grace at 530-318-4637. The shop is found at 152-B Highway 50, and is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Sugar Pine Bakery
There are new owners at Sugar Pine Bakery — locals Angel and Gloria Sosa. Angel brings over 20 years of experience as a pastry chef and chef leader to the establishment. He’s known for his Mexican cakes, while Gloria is known for her decorations. If you’re looking for detail-orientated designs with your holiday cakes and pies, the Sosas are the ones to call.
Sugar Pine Bakery has a great selection of cookies, muffins, pies and cakes. They bake everything in-house and will take special requests if you order ahead of time. Their mini-pies keep the donuts company, and they also offer croissants and breakfast pastries.
The bakery’s wide selection of pies will appeal to any picky eater in your family. They will bake fresh pumpkin, apple, cherry, mixed berry and pecan pie. To celebrate the season, Sugar Pine Bakery will also be baking cheesecakes, pumpkin muffins and almond pear tarts.
Prices for large pies start at $17.95, while their cute and delicious mini-pies go for $5.
The Sosas prefer that you order ahead of time, but will be baking until noon on Thanksgiving Day. For more information on Sugar Pine Bakery call 530-542-7000 or visit in person at 3564 Lake Tahoe Blvd., Suite G.
Tahoe Bakery is a custom-order, at-home bakery, but don’t let their new-age business style scare you away. Their cookies, cakes, pies and other custom desserts are truly works of art. If you are in need of cookies shaped like turkeys or a cake with Santa’s face, Tahoe Bakery is the place to call.
The spot is perfect for your family this Thanksgiving because of its elaborate cake flavors — pumpkin, cherry, carrot, dark chocolate, rum, maple, and even the s’mores crunch, which includes vanilla cake with marshmallow buttercream, graham cracker and chocolate filling.
Their prices range dramatically depending on how large and elaborate the dessert is. Tahoe Bakery encourages you to call to consult on your dessert, and from there they provide you with a price.
Tahoe Bakery strongly encourages you to call at least 48 hours ahead of your planned holiday gathering so they can work harder on your dessert. Contact Tahoe Bakery at 530-307-8500 and check out their website http://www.tahoebakery.com.
