Lake Tahoe comedy scene with Howie Nave: Francisco Ramos at The Improv; Brad Bonar Jr at Carson Comedy Club
Special to Lake Tahoe Action
There’s so much going on up here this week — it’s crazy! And, there are plenty of comedians, too.
At this week’s 30th annual American Century Championship happening at Edgewood, comedians Larry the Cable Guy, Rob Riggle, John O’Hurley, Willie Robertson, Ray Romano, Brian Baumgartner and Charles Barkley are part of the mix. Yes, I said “Charles Barkley” because he’s hilarious and qualifies as a comedian. Have you seen his swing?
By the way, you can hear these funnymen on Howie’s High Sierra Comedy Vault Podcast @ Howienave.com for my annual comedy golf edition on Friday.
Over at The Improv inside Harveys it’s headliner Francisco Ramos. He was a top-10 finalist on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” in 2015. He also has appeared on @midnight on Comedy Central and several times on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Originally from Venezuela, Francisco grew up in Washington, D.C.
They say that most comedians posses a higher intellect (OK, I’m biased) but Francisco has the papers to back him up. Before he was doing stand up, he graduated from the University of Maryland with a double major in finance and international business (wow). I’m sure he would have been a very successful businessman, but I’m kinda glad he’s flourishing in the business of comedy.
However, Francisco isn’t just a comedian. He’s also an actor, writer and voice-over artist. He’s appeared in the TV series “Shameless,” Netflix’s “Lady Dynamite,” “Tribeca” and voiced the role of Marmoset in the animated film “RIO” with Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg.
As a comedian Francisco won first place in the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival sponsored by NBC/COZI TV. American Latino produced a documentary on his rise as a comic for Latino Out Loud (LOL). And most recently debuted his stand up on HBO Latin.
The Improv at Harveys takes place Wednesdays through Sundays at 9 p.m. Learn more at http://www.harveystahoe.com.
Brad Bonar Jr. at Carson comedy Club
Just down the way over at the Carson Comedy Club we have comedian/magician Brad Bonar, Jr. He’s a very talented individual who draws a lot of his material form his immediate family. I don’t know how he finds time to do stand up as he has four children!
His appeal is very universal and it has garnered him a lot of notoriety performing at clubs and theaters, as well as for fortune 500 companies all across the country and throughout the world. His work has taken him to Australia, New Zealand, England, Japan and all across the U.S. entertaining and educating the business world.
I don’t think Brad plans on leaving this comedy world anytime soon. As he puts it, “I have told my friends that I will be entertaining until the day they drag my dead body off of a stage. I am following the dream of entertaining that I have had since a child.”
I think he likes doing comedy.
Shows at the Carson Comedy Club inside the Carson Nugget start at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
