Reno’s Mark Sexton Band heads to Lake Tahoe’s South Shore this week baring a new name.

The Sextones play the Divided Sky in Meyers Friday night, Feb. 12. The band plays a combination of funk and soul and draws on influences like Tower of Power and Stevie Wonder.

“The Sextones are a family of music renegades known for viciously executed soul compositions and white-knuckle driving funk,” according to the band’s online biography. “With Mark Sexton on guitar accompanied by the commanding rhythm section of Alexander Korostinsky on bass, Daniel Weiss on drums and Ryan Taylor on keys, this band is redefining the sound of modern soul.”

The band has made appearances at Placerville’s Hangtown Halloween Ball and the Wanderlust Festival, while also sharing the bill with Macy Gray, Charles Bradley and Dumpstaphunk.

“We are always hungry for more and we’re more than ready for the next big thing,” Sexton said in the bio about a recent tour opening for Toubab Krewe.

The band’s 2013 release, “Young & Naïve,” was mixed by Soulive drummer Alan Evans.

“It sounded great even before I got my hands on it,” Evans said in the bio. “That’s what happens when you get great players playing great songs.”

The Divided Sky is located near the intersection of Navahoe Drive and U.S. Highway 50 in Meyers.
