Lake Tahoe’s WordWave One-Act Play Competition has opened for submissions. In its seventh year, WordWave gives three playwrights the opportunity to have their play showcased on Valhalla Tahoe’s Boathouse Theatre stage on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022.

The deadline for entry 5 p.m. Monday, June 6, and plays can be submitted online at valhallatahoe.com/wordwave-contest. Manuscripts should have a running time of no more than 60 minutes and writers can enter multiple works. Cost to enter each submission is $25.

Three winners of the play competition will have their work directed and produced as a staged reading. Each winner receives a $500 cash prize and a two-night stay to see their work brought to life.

The winners are invited to discuss their work after the staged readings. The audience will have a chance to meet the winners and ask them questions about the plays and their writing processes. In 2021 all three playwrights were thrilled to attend the show.

Susan Boulanger’s “Out, Damn COVID Audition” won for its light-hearted look at friendship after the pandemic. “Big Top Love” written by Nicole DeSalle won its insightful look at the motivations behind our dreams. And Peter McDonough’s “The Process” had the audience in tears.

“In 2022 we’re looking to find fresh voices that need to be heard. Valhalla Tahoe provides an outlet for new playwrights to get exposure and recognition for their work,” said Michelle Morton, executive director of Valhalla Tahoe.

The underlying principle of WordWave is that stories — in song, theater, oral tradition and books — change lives. WordWave provides a venue for locals and visitors to share their stories and validate their creativity. Through this contest and production, Valhalla Tahoe continues to fulfill its mission of preserving Tahoe heritage through art, music and theatre.
