17-year-old will be treated as adult

A 17-year-old boy who tried to rob a man in Stateline will be treated as an adult when he is sentenced Aug. 7.

Shawn Gennarini agreed this month to a plea bargain that resulted in his certification as an adult. In exchange, a potential felony charge was dropped and Gennarini pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor count of conspiracy to commit larceny from a person.

He was originally held for investigation of attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Gennarini and a 15-year-old boy demanded money from a man in a Stateline casino parking lot April 27. Gennarini was carrying a BB gun.

Gennarini was 16 at the time of the offense and was on probation in El Dorado County. He also had a prior criminal record that Deputy District Attorney Derrick Lopez cited in his request for adult certification.

The 15-year-old was treated as a juvenile. He admitted to attempted robbery and could be sent to the China Spring Youth Camp. He is due back in court July 24.

Gross misdemeanor charges carry a maximum of a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Probation is also possible. As part of Gennarini’s plea agreement, Lopez will recommend a three-year probation term that includes six months of jail time, with credit for time already served.

Gennarini had been in detention. He was transferred to the adult jail without bail following Tuesday’s hearing.
