WINTER STORM WARNING FOR THE TAHOE BASIN CHRISTMAS EVE:

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the greater Lake Tahoe and Truckee region. The warning will go into effect at 1 a.m. Thursday morning, Dec. 24, and remain in effect until 10 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Forecasters are calling for 10 to 18 inches of snow west of Highway 89 and along parts of the Sierra Crest. The Tahoe Basin and Truckee area can expect 6 to 12 inches from the storm. According to the warning, snowfall totals will vary considerably across short distances due to varying strengths of the storm pattern.

Motorists should expect delays, especially between the hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. Alternate travel plans have been recommended. Chain restrictions will likely be in place on mountain passes through the storm.

Periods of heavy snowfall and blowing snow may create near whiteout conditions at times. Avalanche risk is also likely to increase; backcountry users should take extra precautions. Forecasters are calling for high winds in association with the storm. Expect gusts up to 50 mph on mountain passes with up to 100 mph winds along ridges.
