7th-graders ride around the lake together

On Wednesday October 11, 2001, fifty 7th graders will be participating in a bicycle relay around Lake Tahoe. Kathy Haven and Mary Palm, 7th grade team teachers at South Tahoe Middle School, conceived the idea two years ago. Students ride a two to five mile stretch, participate in a beach clean-up, take a hike on Rubicom Trail, do some team cheering and learn assorted lessons designed to accompany the outdoor experience. None of this could happen without the help of parents, who share driving, teaching and supervision of students. School administrators support the relay by riding alon with the students. Initially designed as a fund raiser for the numeous educatoinal trips the teachers plan for studens throughout the year, the event has turned into a temendous team-building and bonding experience for all involved.
