8th annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic tees off in Truckee starting Sunday

Staff report

TRUCKEE, Calif. — NFL Hall of Famers and former MLB players are among the celebrities at the eighth annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic held on the North Shore. The classic will be held Sunday and Monday, July 17-18, at Schaffer’s Mill Golf Club — with a shotgun tournament set for Monday.

Athletes and celebrities will gather on the North Shore during the tournament to pay tribute to Upshaw, the former Oakland Raider, while raising funds for cancer programs and traumatic brain injury research. The event serves as the main fundraiser for the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund at the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation.

This year’s field includes NFL Hall of Famers Marcus Allen, Marshall Faulk, Fred Biletnikoff and Tim Brown along with MLB Cy Young winner Vida Blue, Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and downhill skier Daron Rahlves. The 25-player field also features former San Francisco Giants first baseman J.T. Snow and Detroit Lions cornerback Alex Carter.
