The South Lake Tahoe Branch of American Association of University Women has sponsored local girls’ participation in Tech Trek every summer since its inception. This year, three seventh-grade girls were selected to participate — Karen Ramos, South Tahoe Middle School; Michaela Murphy, Kingsbury Middle School; and Bailey Conant, St. Theresa School.

Karen and Michaela attended an AAUW brunch Sept. 8 and told the group about their experiences and activities at the Stanford campus Tech Trek this summer. They talked about individual projects, such as robotics in which they programmed battery-operated robots to perform certain functions, and group outings such as a marine cruise on the San Francisco Bay that involved a catch-and-release of sea life using nets.

They examined plankton, clams, sharks and sting rays and also were able to view a sunken ship. Women professionals in math and the sciences also spoke to the girls about possible career paths. Karen and Michaela said they would like to attend Stanford one day.

Eva Gonzalez of St. Theresa also attended the AAUW brunch. She represented that school at Tech Trek in 2001 and is now studying biology at LTCC. During high school Eva returned to the Tech Trek program as a junior counselor.
