Aces collect first doubleheader sweep in franchise history

METAIRIE, La. – A shutout effort in game one and a five-run sixth inning in game two pushed the Reno Aces to a doubleheader sweep over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday night at Zephyr Field.

The Aces led early in the opener and cruised to a 6-0 victory. In the second half of the twin bill, Reno rallied late to collect a 5-3 win. The two-game effort marked the first doubleheader sweep in Aces’ franchise history.

In the opener, starter Zach Kroenke (5-3) allowed just two hits and no runs over five innings of work to earn the victory. Carlos Rosa struck out four in two scoreless innings, slamming the door on Reno’s fourth shutout effort of the season. Tony Abreu blasted his first home run with the Aces, Brandon Allen hit his team-leading 22nd homer and Carlos Corporan mashed his single-season career-best 10th long ball of the year.

In the nightcap, the Aces’ offense was dormant for most of the night, as the Zephyrs built a slim 2-0 lead through five innings. In the sixth, though, the Reno offense came to life, pushing across five runs to put the Aces in the lead for good. Ed Easley and Ed Rogers knocked in two runs apiece during the winning rally for Reno.

In a bullpen game for the Aces, TJ Beam (3-3) earned the win and Jason Urquidez picked up his fourth save of the season.
