Aces fall to River Cats

RENO – The Reno Aces jumped ahead early, but couldn’t push across another run until the ninth, falling 7-3 to Sacramento on Monday afternoon at Aces Ballpark.

Aces’ second baseman Ryan Roberts lined a ball off shortstop Steve Tolleson’s glove in the first, plating two runs to give the Aces an early 2-0 lead, but the Reno bats fell silent after that. Roberts added a solo home run in the ninth, but it was not enough, as Reno was held to just six hits.

Cesar Valdez (2-4) started and took the loss for Reno despite allowing just three earned runs over five innings. Valdez struck out four and walked three.

Boof Bonser made his first start for Sacramento, tossing three innings and taking a no-decision. Edwar Ramirez earned the win in relief, holding the Aces scoreless over three innings.

Roberts’ home run and Brandon Allen’s first-inning double were the only extra-base hits for Reno. Pedro Ciriaco was the only Ace to record a multihit game, finishing 2 for 4.

Reno and Sacramento square off again Tuesday evening, with the Aces sending RHP Matt Torra (5-5, 3.78 ERA) to the hill against RHP Kyle Middleton (5-5, 2.35 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
