Aces salvage final game of Fresno series in 11 innings

FRESNO – Jason Urquidez was masterful out of the bullpen, and Carlos Corporan delivered the go-ahead two-run single that lifted the Reno Aces to a 5-3 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies in 11 innings Friday night in the series finale at Chukchansi Park.

Fresno pushed across a run in the eighth to tie the score at 3, and the score stayed that way until the 11th, when Corporan slapped a two-out, two-run single through the left side that vaulted the Aces to a 5-3 advantage. Fresno went quietly in the bottom of the 11th, and Reno escaped with the victory and avoided a series sweep.

Urquidez (1-0) came on in the eighth and was brilliant, working the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the win. Urquidez scattered two hits, walking one and striking out one. Aces’ starter Matt Torra was again very effective, yet pinned with a no-decision. Torra allowed two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings of work.

The loss fell to Fresno’s Denny Bautista (1-1), who battled a bout with wildness before surrendering Corporan’s clutch base hit.
