Adam Jensen: Exciting times for mountain bikers at Lake Tahoe

I drive past the soon-to-be-completed Bijou Bike Park everyday on my way to work and, man, is it looking glorious. Big lines, medium lines and small lines all linked with smooth transitions are taking shape out of the trees right in the middle of town. With South Shore in constant need of a gathering spot along it’s linear layout, I can see the bike park, rather than one of the area’s grocery store, quickly becoming where you run into everyone you know. Kudos to the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association, the city and everyone else involved for making it happen. And the new bike park is far from the only thing mountain bikers have to be excited about. TAMBA, the U.S. Forest Service and dozens of volunteers recently completed work on another half mile of features on Lower Corral Trail, which had already become the standard-bearer for great rides at the South Shore following previous efforts. The new zone features “elbow dragging berms, step up jumps, table top jumps and a rebuild of the 25-foot long rock lip jump,” according to TAMBA. Suffice to say, it’s an exciting time to have a mountain bike at Lake Tahoe. Here are a few picks for this weekend at Lake Tahoe:

Meyers Mountain Bike Festival

If that glowing introduction didn’t convince you to get pedaling this weekend, maybe beer and live music will? This event, centered around The Divided Sky in Meyers, will be the hub of the mountain biking community this weekend. Shuttles, demos, a Triple Crown Ride, barbecue, live music and a look into the history of mountain biking at Lake Tahoe are all part of Saturday’s and Sunday’s festivities. It’s also a perfect chance to thank everyone involved for making it such an exciting time for mountain biking at the lake.

Elton John

Sir Elton is in the process of calling it a career, so you may want to get out there and see him while you have the chance. It appears John doesn’t intend to leave anything on the table. The set list from his most recent performance is about as stacked as it gets. Hits like “Bennie and the Jets,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going to Be a Long, Long Time),” “Circle of Life / Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” and “I’m Still Standing” are all represented. John performs Saturday at Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Craft Beer Festival

There will be dozens of beers on tap, backyard games and what is looking to be near-perfect weather for this event at MontBleu Saturday. It reminds me of the immortal words of Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez in the criminally underrated 1990 classic “Men at Work”: “James: What an absolutely gorgeous day. Warm sun, beautiful women… Carl: And the air is just right for drinking!” Stay safe and enjoy the weekend!
