Adam Jensen: Summer weather not giving up the fight just yet

Summer has made every effort to stick around at Lake Tahoe. Traveling the East Shore over the weekend, it seemed like we were in the middle of the busy season, with cars lining the sides of the road, people stand-up paddling under blue skies and the beach at Sand Harbor State Park full of people, at least considering it’s the middle of October.

It doesn’t look like we’ll be quite as lucky in the next few days, with chances of showers through the weekend and high temperatures dipping into the 60s and high 50s. It’s not exactly a sign of the imminent approach of the “Godzilla” El Niño that I can’t turn around without seeing something about, but let’s hope. Here’s some picks for this weekend at Lake Tahoe’s South Shore:

The Dan Band

Speaking to Dan Finnerty of the Dan Band was a hoot. It was pretty clear that the dude is just funny, and his onstage persona is an over-the-top representation of his natural self. Talking to someone who saw him play at the South Shore previously, this one should be just the right mix of comedy and music for a night on the town, especially if you’ve got the mouth of a sailor. Tickets to the sold-out show will be difficult to come by, but there’s always a chance. More information on the performance is available on the opposite page.

Corral Night Ride

It’s never occurred to me to go mountain biking in the dark, but this long-running event hosted by the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association at the popular Corral Trail is a good a reason as any to strap on a headlamp and get a new perspective on some singletrack while giving your Halloween costume a test ride. Go for the mountain biking, stay for the party. More information is available on page 9.

South Lake Tahoe Food and Wine Festival

They had me at sake with this one. From an extensive expo to intimate discussions with experts in food, wine and spirits, there’s a little something for everyone at this annual event at Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe. Each event is individually ticketed, so you can tailor the event to you own liking. Plus, the Gin Blossoms perform Saturday. The group was a big part of my middle-school years and has plenty of hits available to fill the South Shore Room at Harrah’s with a good time.
