Agency seeks ‘best in basin’ for BMPs

Gregory Crofton

Have you seen a good-looking pier? A new house that blends with its environment? Best Management Practices that make a front yard beautiful and are good for the lake?

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, a bistate organization formed in 1969 to protect and manage resources around Lake Tahoe, wants to know about it.

The agency gives out “Best in the Basin” awards each year for projects that demonstrate exceptional planning, design and compatibility with environment.

Typically award categories include: residential, commercial, public service, erosion control and restoration. But this year, two new categories have been added for shorezone/shoreland projects and defensible space work.

Professionals from the Lake Tahoe Basin in the fields of architecture, landscaping, planning, engineering and resource management choose the best projects from a pool of nominees.

Nomination applications are available at http://www.trpa.org or by calling (775) 588-4547, ext. 267. They must be filled out and returned to the agency no later than 5 p.m. on Sept. 10.

Award winners are honored with certificates in front of the TRPA Governing Board. And photographs of the projects hang in the lobby of the TRPA office.
