Airport in Reno still closed

Susan Wood

Travel from the Reno/Tahoe International Airport is up in the air until added security measures are instituted, the Washoe County Airport Authority reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration kept planes grounded Wednesday to allow the nation’s 400 airports to implement new mandates from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“We’ll have a level of security that will mirror the Gulf War crisis,” said authority spokesman Adam Mayberry.

Once the FAA restrictions are lifted, motorists arriving at the airport should prepare to park in a service lot south of the parking garage, which will be closed initially. The structure sits within 300 feet of the airport, too close to comply with a new ban on unattended vehicles.

Vehicles parked in front of the airport will be towed, and there will be no curbside check-in allowed. Increased baggage screenings may delay passengers, who will not be allowed to bring cutting instruments such as knives in carry-on baggage.

Only ticketed passengers will be allowed beyond the security checkpoints. All airplanes will be thoroughly searched before passengers are able to board, and airport security and Reno city police will increase patrols.
