Airport talks slated in Texas

Michael Schneider

Tahoe leaders, from both public and private sectors, will travel to Texas next week to meet with airlines about service to Lake Tahoe Airport.

The city’s contingent leaves for Dallas and Houston June 8 and will meet with representatives of at least two major airlines.

City officials did not want to name the airlines, claiming that information, in the hands of the general public, could jeopardize talks.

En route to Texas are council member Tom Davis; Knud Svendsen, director of sales and marketing for the state line Embassy Suites Resort; Duane Wallace, executive director of the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce; and City Manager Kerry Miller.

Vesta Rea-Gaubert of the airport marketing firm Vesta Rea & Associates also will attend the meetings.

The group will meet with two major airlines on June 8 and 9, and may hold another meeting with a smaller regional airline during the trip.

In April, Rea-Gaubert set up a meeting between city officials and America West Airlines in Phoenix. Although Miller insists the door was left open with America West, there are no plans to bring the airline to Lake Tahoe.

Rea-Gaubert’s Houston-based firm was hired by the city in January to bring commercial passenger service to the Lake Tahoe Airport.

The airport has been without a commercial airline for more than two years.
