Al Tahoe student earns honor

Staff reports

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra has named Alysha Maskaly, a fifth-grade student in Sharon Birchard’s class at Al Tahoe Elementary School, as the recipient of the “On Your Way” award for February. This award is presented each month to an elementary or middle school student who has worked hard to improve his or her reading skills.

Birchard said, “It is evidence of Alysha’s strength of character that she really likes school, strives to do her best, and is a very tenacious student. It is obvious and delightful to see that Alysha loves to read.”

Alysha’s favorite book is “Charlotte’s Web.” She likes reading very much and said, “When you get into a book, sometimes you never really get out. Sometimes, at night, I read more than an hour because I like it so much.”

Alysha was honored at a special awards assembly at her school and received a $25 gift certificate to a local bookstore from Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra. The club’s goal is to enhance youth through education, opportunities and acknowledgment. The focus of the service club is to support youth reading and literacy in our schools and in the community.

“Alysha is enthusiastic about reading. In her free time she usually has a book in her hand,” said Birchard. “This student is ‘on her way’ to becoming a very literate and successful young person.”
