It’s going to be 50 years — 50 YEARS — since the first students completed four years at South Tahe High School and graduated in June 1953. Next year, June 27, 28 and 29, 2003, the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will host a celebration for all graduating classes spanning 1953 to 2003.

Actually, there were graduates from South Tahoe prior to 1953, but they received their diplomas from El Dorado or Douglas counties since the Lake Tahoe Unified School District was yet to be created. But in 1953 the community had a unified school district and five graduates from the local high school classes, then housed in the Lake Valley School at the Y and later the American Legion Hall.

Those five five graduates — Francis Nemeth, Sharon Edwards, Rose Marie Bonham, Kay Wagar and Ray Reeves — have seen their ranks grow to 375 graduates annually in more recent years.

The three-day celebration of the 50 years will begin June 27 with a golf tournament at the Lake Tahoe Country Club and the class of ’83 will hold a 20th reunion dinner at Edgewood Tahoe. On June 28 the Hornblower will reserve the noon cruise for alumni and their families and that evening Harrah’s will join with the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation to host a gala banquet in their convention center. June 29 will allow for individual classes to gather informally. The first noticed is for Classes up to 1960, with a brunch at Round Hill Pines. For information about this latter event, contact Carolyn Meiers at (530) 541-4654 or e-mail mortmeiers@aol.com.

In addition to these scheduled events, alumni and their families will be welcomed at the Heavenly Gondola and the City of South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena at special rates. Many local businesses also have indicated that they will offer reduced rates to alumni registered for the weekend.

To add to the merriment, an alumni band is being gathered for entertainment at the banquet and rehearsals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday of the reunion weekend. Any alumni interested in joining in may contact Linda Kurek at tahoepiano@etahoe.com.

Housing accommodations with special rates for those participating in the weekend have been arranged with Lake Tahoe Accommodations, Harrah’s Tahoe and Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

The first information cards “Save the Dates” have been mailed to over 2,000 alumni. Any alumnus who did not receive one may e-mail his or her address to LaineTahoe@aol.com or call Del Laine at (530) 544-6249 to be put on the mailing list. Additional information will be added to the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation Web site at sthsalumni.org
