Alleged gang fight under investigation
Police continued to investigate on Tuesday what they are calling a gang fight that broke out between 30 to 40 people Sunday evening in the Bijou neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe.
The fight, about 7:30 p.m. in the Blackwood Road area, was followed a few hours later by someone firing 13 shots at an apartment on Wildwood Avenue, said South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Jeff Reagan. Investigators believe the two incidents are related, Reagan said, although he declined to give further details.
The fight reportedly involved a group of Hispanic males, high-school age to young adults, some wearing blue clothing and others wearing red. The combatants wielded bats, knives and sticks, and there were reports that a gun was seen, Reagan said.
Police identified some of the participants in the fight, and found them to be people who have claimed to have gang involvement.
A traffic stop by El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies, who helped police respond to the fight, uncovered a sawed-off rifle and resulted in the arrest of a juvenile, Reagan said.
Douglas County sheriff’s deputies and CHP officers also responded to the altercation.
Just a few hours later, at about 12:15 a.m. Monday, 13 shots were fired at an apartment building on Wildwood Avenue. Twelve shots hit the building, which was occupied by a family, and one hit a boat, Reagan said.
No one was injured in the shooting.
