Allegiant Air return a possibility

A return of Allegiant Air service to the Lake Tahoe Airport is possible, but, for now, nothing is being planned, according to an airline official.

“We’ve had a lot of discussion about doing that,” Allegiant Air President Jim Patterson said on Monday during a phone interview from his Fresno office. “Timing is everything.

We would like to come back to Tahoe, but whether that could happen any time soon remains to be seen.”

After a four-month run, Allegiant Air pulled out of scheduled service to the Lake Tahoe Airport on Oct. 19 to focus on building a route in Long Beach.

South Shore residents may still see an occasional Allegiant plane overhead. The company continues to fly charters to the Lake Tahoe Airport and has one scheduled to land Friday.

Airport Management Assistant Janis Brand is continuing to pursue Allegiant’s return, she said last week.

However, for now, Allegiant’s efforts on scheduled flights are focused on Long Beach, Patterson said.

“We’re dealing with (Long Beach),” he said. “There’s a lot of work to be done to make that work.

“We always thought that Long Beach, with its close proximity to Orange County, would be a good marketplace for Tahoe.”

Patterson said despite the negative impacts of Allegiant’s pull out and Tahoe Air’s recent flight suspension, he believes Lake Tahoe could be a viable marketplace for an airline.

“It doesn’t do the marketplace any good to have (cancellations) happen,” he said. “We have not given up on Tahoe. We’ve never fallen out of love with Tahoe.”
