The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office have identified the man found floating

next to a kayak in Caples Lake on Monday as Robert James Schmidt of Reno.

Deputies had not yet determined a cause of death as of this afternoon.

An autopsy will be completed on Wednesday, said Sgt. Ron Michitarian.

A pair of boaters discovered Schmidt’s body floating near a capsized kayak in Caples Lake on Monday afternoon.

The boaters had seen Schmidt 30 minutes earlier, alive and paddling a kayak, before finding him floating face down in 6 feet of water about 50 feet from shore, clutching an overturned kayak, according to Michitarian.

Caples Lake is a half-mile east of Kirkwood Mountain Resort.
