Alpine sewage spill gets covered

An Alpine County trailer-park owner stands one step closer to having his ailing septic system fixed.

Robert Dykes of the Sierra Pines Trailer Park was recognized by the Alpine County Board of Supervisors as one of two recommended recipients of a state Community Development Block Grant.

The grant application, to be submitted by the county, is due to the state by April 13. The board will make its determination at its regularly scheduled meeting on April 3.

Dykes should receive $115,000 to overhaul or replace his system. These repairs have been the subject of one former tenant’s long crusade against the landlord involving several local, state and federal government agencies.

Judy Jenson, a former resident of the trailer park, attended Tuesday’s meeting with several tenants, who filled the room. All remained quiet during the public hearing, which surprised some county staffers.

Although Jenson wants the leaking septic system replaced in the interest of her fellow tenants, she objects to Dykes’ capitalizing on public money as a means to an end.

Jenson lived in the trailer park outside Woodfords from 1997 to 2000. During that time, she witnessed and videotaped sewage spills from the septic system onto the trailer park grounds.

Dykes diverted the spill by hooking up a hose to the line.
