Ambulance to be chosen

A new ambulance provider serving the Eastern Slope is slated to be chosen Tuesday by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors.

The board will make its decision, in part, based on scoring done by a six-member selection committee picked by the county Health Department.

“We’re bringing back the results of the credential process and the committee that met and their rankings, and then it will be up to the board to take the next steps,” said Gayle Erbe-Hamlin, director of public health.

County staff will make a presentation on the issue, and the Board of Supervisors will take public comment before taking action.

“I think it is a very big decision, so the board will have to decide if they have everything they want,” Erbe-Hamlin said.

The contract with the current provider, Lake Tahoe Ambulance, ends Sept. 1. The new five-year contract will cost the county $94,000 a month for emergency services. Additional revenue will be collected by the ambulance provider for interfacility transport and other services.

Applicants were scored on seven major categories and three subcategories, with 6,000 points possible.

CalTahoe EMS – which would be operated jointly by the city of South Lake Tahoe, North Tahoe Fire Protection District and Lake Valley Fire Protection District – scored about 100 points higher than Reno-based Sierra Emergency Medical Services Alliance, Erbe-Hamlin said.
