STATELINE, Nev. – Reading how the greens are breaking can be as tough as reading the current of a breaking wave. And hitting the ball on the hilly terrain at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course can be just as tough as surfing Pipeline.

Surfing legend Kelly Slater had a solid showing with nine points at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament on Friday. The 11-time ASP World Champion had a rough start on the front nine. He managed too par holes two and four before a double-bogey cost him two points. A par on nine put him back in the positive.

“It’s fun, I gotta figure out the elevation change for the play,” Slater said after the first nine holes, that he described as going as “so,so.”

“A perfect bunker shot right in front of the green and just one putt made him look really professional though,” said Emma Meyers, a fan of his who watched him on the ninth green.

Slater made up plenty of points on the back nine though. He parred hole 10, 11 and 13 for three points. A double-bogey set him back on 14, but he birdied holes 15 and 16 for a quick six points. A par on 18 finished Slater with 9 points on the day.

“I played a lot in Hawaii, but surfing is really second nature where I don’t have to think about what I’m doing,” Slater said, and explained that golfing really is a different kind of challenge.

“I didn’t grow up playing. I started playing in my 20’s, but I love it and I play a lot.” he said.
