With Spay Day USA set for Tuesday, local animal advocates are calling on South Lake Tahoe residents to have their pets spayed or neutered or to sponsor the spaying or neutering of another pet. Officials say winter is the prime time to prevent the annual boom in spring litters.

Spay-Neuter assistance is available from the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and S.P.C.A. through the Prevent-A-Litter (PAL) program, established in 1984 to help control local pet overpopulation. The economic turndown has worsened the problem as people give up pets they no longer can afford to keep.

Nationally, over four million pets are being euthanized in shelters simply because there are not enough homes available, according to the humane society.

For information about Spay Day USA, to make a donation to support the local PAL program, or to obtain spay-neuter assistance, call the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and S.P.C.A. at (530) 542-2857.
