Annual Donner Party hike event needs volunteers

Tribune News Service

DONNER SUMMIT – Learn the historic events of the Donner Party and emigrant history while enjoying the company of fellow hikers on the trails that led to the development of California. The Truckee-Donner Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers to assist in guiding this year’s 18th Annual Donner Party Hike.

Practice hikes take place throughout August and September, which familiarize volunteer guides with historic information and terrain. The actual event takes place Saturday, Oct. 9 and includes six different hikes. Those who choose to volunteer this year will assist the trained guides by keeping the group together and have the opportunity to move into trained guide positions themselves next year.

Trained guides lead the event participants on hikes while providing the historic information that will be learned in training. The practice hikes range from 4 to 6 miles and from moderate to strenuous in difficulty.

Sponsors of the event include the Cedar House Sport Hotel, Donner Lake Village Resort, Donner Memorial State Park, Hampton Inn and Suites Tahoe-Truckee, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Truckee Donner Lodge (formerly Holiday Inn Express), Sugar Bowl Ski Area, The Inn at Truckee, the town of Truckee and the U.S. Forest Service.

Those interested in volunteering may contact the Truckee-Donner Chamber of Commerce by calling (530) 587-8808 or e-mail info@truckee.com.
