Annual snowshoe 5K draws a crowd

Provided to the Tribune

Feb. 27 was a chilly, but sunny morning for the Fresh Tracks 5K Snowshoe Walk/Run sponsored by Historic Camp Richardson Resort and hosted by the Tahoe Mountain Milers & Sagebrush Stompers Running Clubs. More than 50 walkers and runners participated. Many were first time walkers and runners and they all said they had a great time on a beautiful day. Floyd Whiting, 69, of Reno couldn’t keep one of his snowshoes on after several tries so he carried the one shoe and ran with one shoe on and one shoe off. This was his first time racing in snowshoes. Ross McMahon, 41, was the first to cross the finish line in 22:07. His wife, Sara McMahon, 38, was the first woman in 26:19. They each received a plaque donated by Jan Bleiweiss. Renee Gorevin created unique snowshoe awards for all the age division winners. Masters winners were Ross McMahon and Tida Saltz. Dave Cotter was chef for the party in the snow afterwards with sausages, hot dogs, and chili on the menu.
