Applebee’s may be joining the neighborhood

Susan Wood

Applebee’s International is considering building a restaurant at South Lake Tahoe, its headquarters confirmed last week.

The company has been considering a location somewhere on Highway 50 at Stateline on the California side, but a specific spot was not identified.

Negotiations are under discussion, land planner Gary Midkiff said.

If the proposed timeline holds, spokeswoman Cathy Koch expects construction to begin in the summer. The building should be completed in the fall.

Koch would not disclose the cost of the project.

Applebee’s develops, franchises and operates casual dining restaurants in 49 states and eight countries. More than 1,400 locations have been established.

The company, based in Overland Park, Kansas, trades its stock on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbol APPB.

Each Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar features a moderately priced menu and is billed as a family restaurant, the company said.

The size of a restaurant in Tahoe is undetermined.

“Our restaurants vary in size and reflect the neighborhood where we do business,” Koch said.

The decor conveys the theme with a wall dedicated to a hometown hero. The restaurant chain would announce the hero a month before opening.

Koch agreed the selection would require a lot of research into the community.
