A cyclist suffered serious injuries when he was reportedly struck by a vehicle just before noon Tuesday in the area of Jicarilla Drive and Pioneer Trail.

The 70-year-old man, of Yuma, Ariz., was flown to Renown Hospital in Reno with life-threatening injuries. According to a California Highway Patrol press release, he suffered a head injury. The man’s identity had not been released as of Thursday because of the nature of his injuries and because his family in Arizona had not been notified of the incident.

The cyclist was unconscious when emergency personnel reached him, Officer Wayne Tillman said Tuesday.

The incident occurred when a 35-year-old man, of Venice, who was driving a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling northbound on Pioneer Trail between 45 and 50 mph, according to the press release. The cyclist was traveling in the same direction about 20 mph. The SUV drifted to the right and struck the cyclist with the passenger-side rearview mirror, causing the 70-year-old man to lose control of the bicycle. The cyclist was ejected onto the roadway, striking his head and rolling over several times before coming to a stop.

The incident is still under investigation, but it is not believed drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident.
