Artisans to meet public

Handweavers Judy and Larry Romiti will be at Tahoe Country in Heavenly Village from noon to 4 p.m. today.

The Romitis’ rug and tapestry designs add a dynamic, bold, modern touch in working ancient motifs as well as original abstract and impressionistic creations. Each piece is a unique design, entirely original from the fleece to the finished product, heirloom quality, and the perfect addition to any home.

Inspiration from some of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth takes the Romitis on their journey from design to handwoven masterpieces. Ecologically sensitive, they begin their work by choosing fleece from organically raised sheep, alpaca, llama and angora, many of whom are raised in the Sierra for the quality of their wool.

Since no dyes have been utilized, the sheen and color are permanent and one of the couple’s favorite pastimes is to search out new animals that will provide new shade and texture to their work. Carding, blending, spinning, washing and weaving are all done by the artists. Each piece woven by the Romitis is the product of a meditative experience. Once it includes the viewer, it becomes art.

It is this connection – a captured energy between the artist and viewer – that gives the Romitis even more satisfaction. Come meet this unique artisan couple who greatly appreciate the calm, creative lifestyle they are blessed with here in Tahoe.
