Artist Asencio to make appearance at South Shore gallery
August 8, 2008
One of the best-selling artists in the country will make an appearance at Marcus Ashley Galleries this weekend, Aug. 8-9.
Contemporary young master Henry Asencio will be in the gallery from 6-9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Asencio rarely paints live at shows, but he has agreed to paint live Sunday at his third appearance at the gallery.
Inspired by the female form, Asencio’s work has earned praise for its combination of artistic styles ” abstract expressionism, abstract realism and figurative impressionism are a few of the classifications. Asencio, who paints in oils has emerged as a leading American artist, and first-time-buyers and established collectors alike seek out his work.
“Nothing compares to the richness and workability of the oil medium, and it fits (my) technique perfectly,” Asencio said.
He frequently works with live models or photographs. Asencio applies paint with a palette knife and has recently begun to paint on board, as the surface is more resilient to his aggressive style. The result is a passionate portrayal of the female form ” a signature style that has earned him international accolades.
It’s rare for any galleries to have more than one original Asencio available at a time, but Marcus Ashley Galleries has six this weekend. In addition to the original oils, the gallery will feature two original pastel drawings as well as several popular hand-embellished reproductions.
