Author sings for students

William Ferchland, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Where, oh where, is my underwear?

Barney Saltzberg, children’s book author, visited Tahoe Valley Elementary School Friday with a slide show on his work and a guitar to sing, “Where, oh where, is my underwear?”

With over 30 published children’s books under his belt, Saltzberg used a computer presentation to give students a virtual tour of his studio.

A giant pencil, heaps of books and hills of toys surrounded his writing haven. Giggles erupted from the young audience, especially when Saltzberg showed a picture of his neighbor he used for a character in a book called “Mrs. Morgan’s Lawn.” The book was a 2002 California Young Reader Medal nominee.

Saltzberg, 47, began writing when he was in elementary school. The drawings in books, such as “Charlotte’s Web” and “Curious George” pulled him in the direction of children’s literature. But his first published book, “It Must Have Been the Wind,” came out after college when he was 21.

“People mistake picture books as juvenile but there are some very profound and meaningful messages found in the pages,” he said.
