Backcountry skier found dead

An unidentified skier died Wednesday southwest of the Kirkwood Ski Resort, according to the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office.

Kirkwood contacted the sheriff’s office Wednesday afternoon to report a skiing accident. The victim’s injuries were reportedly severe, and a base hospital doctor pronounced death after being briefed on the victim’s condition.

The area where the incident occurred is part of the Mokelumne Wilderness near Emigrant Lake and not a part of the ski resort.

The identity, age and sex of the victim have not been released. The identity will not be released until the next of kin can be notified.
