Dan Thrift / Tahoe Daily Tribune / Volunteers for the Barton Skilled Nursing Facility activities department were honored at a recent luncheon, where each was presented a certificate recognizing his or her service.

The Barton Skilled Nursing Facility activities department honored its volunteers Oct. 29 with a luncheon at the Shoreline Café. Each volunteer received a certificate honoring his or her service and lots of hugs.

Melinda Brogna, director of nursing, along with Maureen Froyum, director of activities, and Rita Jackson and Kevin Brown, activities assistants, all agree that the volunteers help make their program wonderful.

“These special people donate their talents and time to give our residents so much more than words can describe,” they said.

During the luncheon, volunteers introduced themselves to the group and explained what they did and why. This was the first time everyone was all together. Volunteers offer a variety of talents from bingo to piano playing, Bible study, card games, crafts and hair cutting to hand holding, lending a listening ear, and helping with field trips.

The volunteers all agree that they receive much more than they give and feel a part of a large family.

Volunteers who were honored at the event include Sandy Hatfield, Deb Cole, Renee Buckley, Samantha Brogna, Manuel Hernandez, Daniel Rivas, C.J. Brown, Annie Rupert, Susan Kidwell, Glenn Smith, Margie Sand, Francisco Clavel-Carrillo and Gloria Shindelbower.
