BB gun brought to Bijou Community School

A fourth-grade student at Bijou Community School was given a five-day suspension Tuesday for reportedly bringing his father’s BB gun to school, school officials and authorities said.

The student, who was not identified because of his age, will be recommended for expulsion, but that decision is ultimately left to the five-member school board.

The replica handgun with a 5-inch barrel was not brandished by the student or fired on campus, said Interim Superintendent Lorraine Garcy. The weapon was quickly confiscated before the beginning of school by staff who were notified of the BB gun by other students, school officials said.

“He could have hurt somebody with it,” Garcy said.

South Lake Tahoe police officers were notified of the incident, but the situation was under control before their arrival.

Lt. Martin Hewlett said the 9-year-old brought the BB gun to school in a backpack to show his friend.

Bijou Principal Karen Tinlin said she has had more grave student infractions in her history in education.

“It’s serious but has been dealt with,” she said.
