Besson’s clutch home run keys Warriors’ comeback win

Staff report

Katie Besson hit an inside-the-park home run with two outs in the seventh inning to force extra innings and Megan Miller stroked a game-winning RBI single in the eight as Whittell High’s softball team rallied to beat Smith Valley 10-9 Tuesday at Lampe Park.

Nikki Simon got the winning rally going in the eighth with a single, then she advanced to third base on Bri Brewer’s groundout. Miller delivered the winning hit with two outs.

Prior to the winning rally in the eight, center fielder Chaine Paradis made a running catch in the gap in right-center with two Smith Valley runners aboard to end the threat.

Smith Valley appeared to have the game in hand in the bottom of the seventh, but Nina Jimenez coaxed a two-out walk to set up Besson’s heroics.

“Katie hit the ball to the fence on one hop. It would have been out of any other park,” said Whittell coach Rich Barna.

Brewer and Heather Esquivel each delivered two hits for the Warriors. One of Brewer’s hit went for three bases.

Whittell (8-8 overall) plays at Virginia City on Wednesday at3:30 p.m.
