Bids for STIC extended until July 10

Michael Schneider

The city of South Lake Tahoe has extended the deadline to receive business proposals to operate the ice center on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

The deadline was June 30, but has been extended to July 10.

Parks Superintendent Steve Weiss said three proposals have been received. He said the city’s parks staff will wait until after the final deadline to review the proposals.

According to Weiss, city staff took longer than expected to draft guidelines for proposals, and that encroached on the time for people to consider applying.

The ice center was to be run by a group of city residents under the name South Tahoe Ice Center. STIC was unable to gather sufficient funds to open.

In April, the City Council voted to spend $20,000 and buy the fencing around the ice rink. That cost will be passed on to any purchaser of the rink along with an additional $15,000 the city paid to have a water line relocated on the site.

The proposal requests were advertised in industry trade publications in the past months.

City Manager Kerry Miller said in April a new developer could begin construction on the rink in August and it could be open by next winter.
