Bill’s grills: casino is back with a neighborhood tavern
Mike Leeper racked up a lot of victories during his seven years as soccer coach at Whittell High School. His record in the restaurant business is even more impressive.
Leeper opened Coyote Grill in Round Hill in 2000; it was so successful he was able to start a second Coyote Grill in Minden, which is one of the biggest sports bars in the region. On Friday, Dec. 21, he will open his third restaurant in a location that must be a businessman’s dream.
Bar24 Taproom & Grill is inside Bill’s Casino, right in the center of the Casino Corridor between Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa. Harrah’s owns Bill’s.
“Harrah’s made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Leeper said.
Bar24 takes its name from the 24 beers it has on tap. It has an extensive menu featuring “Pizza for Life,” “Tacos to Fight Over” and “Burritos are Forever” and of course the Coyote Grill standard, the fajitas.
There is a 10-foot video screen and eight 52-inch plasma screens, which will display sports including games from the NFL Direct Ticket and college football’s Gameplan. All the pay-per-view mixed martial arts and boxing matches also will show.
The venue, which has two pool tables, offers a contrast to the nightclubs at Harrah’s and the MontBleu.
“It’s a neighborhood place that’s a warm, inviting place to come in, have a cold beer, have a good bite to eat,” Leeper said. “The food’s always consistent and good. We’ve had the same cooks going with us for seven years – a lot of new staff and a lot of great, experienced staff who have good local followings.”
Cey kitchen employees will constitute most of the staff coming over from the other properties.
Bar24 will present live music and DJs on Friday and Saturday nights. Tonight’s grand opening will feature the Reno rock ‘n’ roll band Left of Center. The house sound system used to be the equipment at the renowned South Shore Room in Harrah’s.
On weekends there will be a breakfast buffet from 9 p.m. to 1 p.m., which diners can complement with Bar 24’s signature drink, the Bloody Mary, which is touted as “The Greatest Bloody Mary on Earth.”
“Managing a restaurant is like coaching,” Leeper said. “You have a team with a common goal, and that is satisfying the customer.”
