Blue Lake part of parking problem

Parking at the Ski Run Marina has been an issue since 1996, and everybody wants some.

Michael Phillips, the owner of Ski Run Marina, could shortly be leasing the Blue Lakes parking lot, according to a South Tahoe Redevelopment Agency subcommittee.

The lease will need to be approved at the June 5 Redevelopment Agency meeting.

For the last two years Phillips has leased the Blue Lake parking lot for $1.

But this year the Redevelopment Agency voted down the $1 fee, saying that more money was needed to lease property it purchased for six figures about five years ago.

“I think it establishes a precedent,” Councilwoman Brooke Laine said. “It is a piece of property the city spent a lot of money on, and the developer has to understand that.”

This year, if the two-year lease agreement is approved, Phillips will pay $2,000 a year to rent the 45 spaces for the summer months.

Councilman Tom Davis said this is only a short-term solution and the Redevelopment Agency will need to come up with a long-term plan for the property

“The long-term fix is a little more complex,” he said.

The Blue Lakes lot was initially purchased as a hotel. The room allocations were transferred for redevelopment hotel projects.
