The Tahoe Maritime Museum brings history to life on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe this Saturday.

The museum will kick off a grand opening celebration of its new building with a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. Opening-day festivities include events for the whole family. Guided tours are available at noon and 2 p.m., and there will be arts and crafts projects, opening-day mementos, refreshments and raffle prizes. Admission is free.

The new museum features an area for youngsters. Kids can personalize sailor hats, get their faces painted, try on costumes, tie knots, go on a scavenger hunt and more.

Throughout the day, museum staff and volunteers will raffle off more than a dozen prizes. In addition, everyone who joins the museum on opening day is automatically eligible for a drawing for the grand raffle prize, a cocktail cruise for four aboard the Thunderbird yacht and a private guided tour of the Thunderbird Lodge.

The museum is located at 5205 West Lake Blvd. in Homewood. Hours of operation are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Tuesdays throughout the summer. Admission is $5, or free for free for children younger than 12 and museum members. For more information, call (530) 525-9253 or visit
